Celiac Disease
When does it usually develop?
CD can be diagnosed at any age. It is often diagnosed in infancy, between the ages of 9-12 months, a few months after gluten-containing cereals have been introduced. Another peak time for diagnosis is in the 4th and 5th decades of life. A few reports describe the onset of symptoms in adults after a period of physical stress, such as surgery or pregnancy. It has been theorized that such individuals were genetically predisposed to CD, and that the physical stress 'unmasked' the condition.
