What is dermatitis herpetiformis?

Dermatitis herpetiformis, commonly known as "DH", is a form of CD in which the skin is the primary target. The symptoms of DH are red, itchy patches that most commonly develop on elbows, underside of the arms, and knees. Virtually all people with DH also have the gluten-sensitive small intestinal abnormalities seen in CD, although often of a less severe nature.
